About Us - The Origin Story
(according to Joel)

All great ideas should have an origin story. For SiteStream, it began in the year 2000 in a small, dimly lit warehouse in Superior, Wisconsin. A few friends landed summer jobs at an audio production company, and I KNEW this was to be my destiny. Brian, the owner, along with Pat, his business partner, sat in the office grumbling over the doldrums of running a company. I confidently marched in as any scrappy 17-year-old kid would do and was promptly denied employment on the spot. As I retreated to lick my wounds and reconsider my life path, I noticed the shop and warehouse were a chaotic mess that could use some love. Workbenches were buried in piles of random bolts, wire, hinges, and leftover parts. The staging was stacked like precarious dominoes in front of the dock doors and spilled into the walkway. Lighting, rigging, speakers, and cabling all melded into tangles of hastily discarded pasta-like monsters in every corner.

So instead of leaving, I rolled up my sleeves, sat down, and got to work. For several weeks, I would arrive every morning to sort every nut, screw, bolt, and wire into a sea of strategic piles. Brian would walk by, first surprised, then slightly annoyed, and remind me that I didn’t work there and should not expect a paycheck. I would reply, “No worries – I just wanted to help.” After several days had passed, he arrived carrying hundreds of sorting trays with his signature sigh of reluctant approval, and from this would become the most gloriously organized wall of assembly parts and do-dads for whatever project your mind could come up with. The stars finally aligned when they needed someone to drive a truck to Marquette, Michigan. I slightly exaggerated my experience with trucks and accepted the quest. When the day arrived, a blizzard set in. I barely reached my destination, white as a ghost and regretting ever saying I was capable.

Twenty-five years later, I look back on those days with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for their impact on my life. It wasn’t just an audio company; we would constantly be developing some new custom-built concept, modifying the circuitry on existing components, or designing road cases like a maniacal toy shop. I learned several trades: woodworking, electronics, speaker repair and reconing, fiberglassing, and navigating a tense workplace. It would imbue my insatiable desire to always look for new and better ways to improve and deliver exceptional products and experiences for our clients. Everywhere I worked from that day forward, I would always be an agent of change; a futurist, a dreamer, and someone who knew it could be done.

Joel Heaslip

Founder/CEO

My journey began as a scrappy 17 year old kid learning to be an audio engineer. By 19, I was leading crews as a production manager while graduating early from high school. Two degrees later in broadcast and digital media, I found myself right back in live events. Now after 25 years in the industry, I have the profound pleasure of building something special - pairing my experience in broadcast technology and live event production to pioneer a brave new world of applied technology and automation.
